Fibromas (also known as Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra / DPN, and a common variant of seborrheic keratoses) are usually 1- to 5-mm in diameter flat in appearance or 1- to 3-mm in elevation / slightly raised benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions.

These Fibromas are often mistaken for skin tags, moles or skin warts, usually appearing on young adults in their early 20’s and beyond.  People from African or Asian bloodlines are the ethnic groups most often inflicted with this skin Irregularity.  Two famous Hollywood celebrities displaying this condition and in the public eye extensively were Bill Cosby and Morgan Freeman.  As for both of these individuals, they have extensive Fibromas on their faces.  Approximately 25% of people with facial lesions will also have lesions on the body.

These epidermal growths that present as hyperpigmented or skin-coloured beauty marks or skin warts (papules) develop on the face predominately around the eyes and cheeks.  They can also be found in great numbers on the neck and upper trunk/chest.

At Beauty-Full Spa in Pickering, they have removed several hundred in a single session off the neck and upper trunk.  The results are amazing, with no sign that they were ever thereafter the healing period.

The exact cause is unknown.  However, just as other Fitzpatrick skin types get moles, one thing appears to be certain that this condition is hereditary.  If grandparents or parents have them, you most likely will develop them.

The condition has been reported in populations of African heritage, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Europeans, and Mexicans. It is estimated that 33% of African American adults in the United States have DPN, which is also the case in Canada from immigrants from other countries, including the Caribbean.

There have been no definitive studies to explain why women are twice as likely to be affected as men with children as young as age 3 developing the condition. The number and size of lesions increase with age, peaking in the sixth decade. DPN is not related to any systemic disease or syndrome; however, an eruptive form has been reported in association with adenocarcinoma of the colon (aggressive colon cancer).  Thus, if it appears out of nowhere, you should see your physician immediately to rule out colon cancer.

Fibromas are removed for cosmetic purposes as they do not contribute to an appearance of evenness in facial skin tone. Due to the tendency of darker skin types to heal with dyspigmentation, caution should be used when choosing treatment modalities.

At Beauty-Full Spa Pickering these DPN’s are removed using Mild Electrocautery.  Follow with proven home care instructions, the client’s skin heals quickly, smoothly with dyspigmentation present for a short time.  As the skin heals the darkness disappears and when it is all said and done the skin tone is even, smooth and no sign that the lesions where ever-present.

To minimize scarring and pigmentation problems, more aggressive, time savings treatment modalities should be avoided.  These include snip excision with scissors, plasma pens, laser, KTP, PDL, Nd:YAG, and CO2 lasers. Many of these methods result in multiple treatments being required.  In particular, CO2 Lasers require up to three sessions.  Using Mild Electrocautery from Beauty-Full Spa Pickering, generally, only a single session is required.

Before attending a free consultation at Beauty-Full Spa Pickering, it is recommended that you visit with your family physician and obtain their permission for removal.  Beauty-Full Spa cannot provide a price over the phone for several reasons.  How many that can be removed in a signal visit is determined by the location requiring treatment; your health status; and your ability to follow their simple take-home care instructions.

Do they come back?  At Beauty-Full Spa Pickering, they have found there is a 50/50 chance of the returning.  This is based on the client’s age, area to be treated and the overall state of health.  If you are young, Mild Electrocautery may be a temporary solution as your skin’s cells continue to turn over so that the condition may return in the future, an unspecified time.  If you are 60 or above, your skin’s growth has slowed down, so most likely there is a very small likelihood that once removed they may return.

They are in many countries referred to as the “family moles”, so it could be like fate removed and recalled at a later date.  So, if you little spots or beauty marks make a return visit, don’t let them become a nuisance and return to Beauty-Full Spa Pickering and have them burnt off.  The safest, fasted and yielding the best possible results from a skilled staff delivering results since 2005.
