The Ideal Protein Protocol Overview

Developed by Dr. Tran Tien Chanh, a European-Asian medical doctor with a PhD in nutrition, sports medicine and biology.  Until December 31, 2019, the Ideal Protein Diet was a 4-stage plan. One thing that makes the Ideal Protein Diet unique among its competing weight loss methods is the founder is alive and well.  The other major factor is that the Ideal Protein Protocol has never remained stagnant.  With new science uncovering new truths and casting away unproven science from the past, the Ideal Protein Protocol made a significant change to the protocol on January 1, 2020.

Taking hard data from the client database, the new, improved Ideal Protein Protocol moved from a 4-Phase Program to a 3-Phase Program.  Phase One – Weight Loss; Phase Two – Stabilization; and Phase Three – Maintenance.

The objectives remain the same, just a faster method to get there and for long term maintenance of the new weight achieved.

This diet is best to be considered as a 3-stage retraining eating plan (or “diet”) helps stabilize the pancreas and blood sugar levels while burning fat and maintaining muscle and other lean tissue.  It promotes long-term health with proven weight control methods, not a “diet” that leaves participants with the “Now what?” question after the weight has been lost.  The plan targets prevention and solutions for Syndrome X, also called the “metabolic syndrome.”  To qualify as part of this epidemic that is steamrolling North America, adults or children need only suffer from 2 of the 4 components of the metabolic syndrome: 1) obesity, 2) blood sugar, 3) cholesterol and 4) blood pressure.

The plan was originally developed to secure the muscle mass of high-performance athletes and regulate their insulin levels.  Dr. Tran improved the protein source of the acclaimed “protein diet” originated in 1973 by Dr. Blackburn, a Harvard University professor.  Dr. Tran used this approach with athletes in Europe for over 18 years, also targeting energy and good, safe nutrition.  The Ideal diet plan is focused on the pancreas, insulin production,  stabilizing using foods low on the Glycemic Index and maintaining weight loss long term.  The Ideal diet’s engine is an alkalized and mineralized program made of four distinctive nutritional supplements including Omega oils, calcium & magnesium, multi-vitamins, and potassium.

The Weight Loss Phase, Stage 1 objective is designed to maximize fat loss through nutritional ketosis, a safe and natural metabolic state in which the body’s primary fuel source is coming from ketone bodies – energy molecules produced by “burning fat”.

On the Ideal Protein protocol, nutritional ketosis is achieved by restricting carbohydrates (sugar) and reducing calories (1200 calories or above per day) thereby compelling the body to transition to fat (fatty acids) as an alternative energy source, which provides ample energy to meet the body’s daily needs.

Throughout the Weight Loss Phase, lean body mass (muscle) is preserved through the intake of our protein-based partial meal replacements, which contain protein of high biological value. Depending on one’s starting weight, clients can expect to consume between 3-5 partial meal replacements daily, in addition to 225 g / 8 ounces of a whole protein source, such as beef, chicken or fish. Essential daily nutrients such as fibre, water and micronutrition are provided through the intake of low-glycemic vegetables (4 cups per day), micronutrient replacements (Multivitamin, Potassium, Omega-3 Plus, Cal-Mag) and 2 Litres / 64 ounces of water.

Typical results vary up to 6 to 8 pounds lost during the first two weeks and up to 2 pounds per week thereafter when the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Protocol is followed properly. Clients remain in the Weight Loss Phase until they reach their weight loss goal or objective.

The Stabilization Phase, Stage 2 objective is designed to help defend the body’s “new” weight against its former weight, or “weight set point.”

Following weight loss, the body fights to regain lost weight by increasing hunger and appetite, reducing satiety (period of feeling “satisfied” between meals), and lowering energy expenditure. This creates what is known as an “energy gap” – a state in which more calories are desired than required. This can make weight loss difficult to manage and maintain. The objective of Stabilization is to narrow this “energy gap” through research-based nutritional interventions that effectively manage hunger, promote greater satiety and maintain weight loss.

During week 1, clients segue into Stabilization through what is called a “Step-down” week. During this step-down week, calories are increased by removing 1 Ideal Protein partial meal replacement and replacing it with 225 g / 8 ounces of lunch protein as well as 4 cups of vegetables. Clients are required to record their intake during this week in an accompanying food record, which will be used a “template” from which clients can construct meal examples during their Stabilization onboarding, which occurs on week 2 of Stabilization.

During this 45-minute onboarding appointment, coaches determine the client’s daily macro targets through a tool on the platform. Using the step-down food record as a template, clients can easily incorporate these macro targets of protein, added fats and carbohydrates into their existing food record, creating sample menus for the week ahead.

The reintroduction of carbohydrates is a crucial part of Stabilization, and is achieved through a foundation of unlimited low-glycemic vegetables and a slow and measured increase in net carbohydrates, beginning at 40 net carbs and increasing weekly by 5 net carbs as tolerated per hunger and satiety ratings (recorded in the journal) as well as weight trends.

Once a client’s hunger is managed and weight remains stable, which may occur through various weekly “tweaks” in macronutrients (per coaching algorithms), the client can segue into Maintenance. Clients are recommended to remain in Stabilization until weight loss and hunger are stabilized.

The current recommendations of duration in this Phase are as follows:

For weight loss < 20 pounds, a minimum of 2 weeks in Stabilization

For weight loss 20 – 49 pounds, a minimum of 4 weeks in Stabilization

For weight loss 50 – 80 pounds, a minimum of 6 weeks in Stabilization

For weight loss over 80 pounds, a minimum of 8 weeks in Stabilization

The Maintenance Phase, Stage 3 Objective is all about management.  Once weight loss and hunger are stabilized and manageable, clients enter our 12-month, 17-visit Weight Maintenance Phase. During this Phase, net carbs will continue to be increased (past 75 net carbs) based on activity level. During the Maintenance Phase, clients will still receive 1:1 coaching support and guidance as they navigate the “real food” environment. In addition to ongoing education and support, both in-person as well as through our app, clients will be encouraged to complete 2 tune-ups per year to effectively maintain weight loss.

Additional Considerations:

The program utilizes a natural health coach that may facilitate success for even the most frustrated dieter that has “tried everything” or some troubled with blood sugar challenges.  This valuable coaching process serves to educate and encourage the dieters with a consistent method that is scientifically proven and deemed by most as easy to execute and maintain.

Although dieters are warned that the first three days of the sugar withdrawals can be quite tough, the small percentage of those who experience problems, almost always hang in there for amazing results starting on day four.  Most commonly, dieters tell us about:

– Improved energy and reduced cravings on usually the fourth or fifth day

– Dramatically improved blood sugar for the sugar challenged, often within the first week

– Elated joy and pride early in the process and attainment of their goal weight often exceeding it

– Maintaining their goal weight, even after extended vacations from the diet

These are the typical results shared by participants in the program:

– Quick weight loss without sacrificing muscle mass

– Gaining an understanding of how food affects and is utilized by the body, including what causes fat storage

– Utilization of fat for energy usually by day four – fat (including cellulite) that sequesters chemical toxins

– Improved energy and appetite control, reduced cravings – usually on days four or five

– Improved blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduced blood pressure

The Ideal Diet instant packets contain the highest quality proteins and are low in carbohydrates and fat with no trans fats, no aspartame and are MSG- and GMO-free.  Protein is the main building block in the body, is the primary component of most cells, and is essential to human life.  Every cell in the body has it, including skin, hair, bones, muscle and organ tissue.  It is found in the bloodstream, in hormones and in enzymes.

During digestion, protein is metabolized into amino acids, the building blocks of protein.  The body uses amino acids for energy as well as to produce enzymes and other essential proteins.  The body synthesizes some amino acids but it cannot synthesize (or produce) the “essential” amino acids.  These essential amino acids must be consumed in the daily diet, and are found in all of the Ideal Diet foods.

The Ideal Diet is nothing like the typical diet that offers packaged foods.  Ideal’s instant packets are NOT the common meal replacements that contain a so-called “balance” of carbohydrates, fats and protein.  Consuming carbohydrates promotes insulin production thereby promoting fat storage.  For a balanced diet, consuming fats is very important, but for FAT LOSS, one must eliminate most fat from the diet for the initial stage of the program.  Eating a “balanced diet” prevents the proper set up of the fat loss process in the body.  One of the goals of the Ideal diet is to cause the body to delve into its energy reserves-into stored fat-for its energy, thereby facilitating FAT LOSS.

Additionally, by virtually eliminating all highly-refined sugars and starches from your diet, the pancreas is afforded a rest since there is no need for it to produce much insulin, which happens to be its main function.

Whether or not the pancreas is working properly partly determines one’s predisposition to gain or not to gain weight.  Clinical research has shown that a dysfunctional pancreas is often a key reason many people have difficulty losing weight.  A properly functioning pancreas is essential to good health and healthy weight loss.  A properly functioning pancreas produces the right amount of insulin necessary to regulate our blood sugar levels (or Glycemia).  The Ideal Diet is a short-term “diet” program for the pancreas as well as a program for fat loss.

In the September 1958, issue of “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”, Dr Max Wishnofsky, MD published an article entitled, “Caloric Equivalents of Gained or Lost Weight”. After analyzing the existing literature of that period, Dr Wishnofsky concluded that 3,500 is the caloric value of one pound of body weight lost or gained. For decades his result has been cited thousands of times in the media, scientific literature, and textbooks.  Today there is the fact that one pound of fat equals 454 grams (actual 453.6 grams).  It is now accepted that pure body fat contains 8.7 – 9.5 calories per gram or an average rounded to 9 calories per gram of fat.  Thus 454 x 9 = 4,086 or rounded 4,100 calories per pound of body fat, not the widely publicized 3,500.  Whenever possible, the correction should be implemented at the earliest potential opportunity as a more significant number motivates the dieter to achieve a more substantial weight loss.

More detail on how it works:

The typical American diet consisting of processed foods-refined sugars and starches such as bread, pasta, potatoes, snacks and sweets, etc.-overworks the pancreas.  The pancreas must constantly pump out insulin to take care of all the sugar (or glucose) that makes up these foods.  (Realize that a slice of bread is nothing but pure, simple sugar; the same is true for potatoes, pasta, white rice and all other processed “white” foods, including breakfast cereals.)

It is important to understand that the minute carbohydrates are consumed, they are broken down into glucose in the bloodstream, and then whatever is not needed immediately for energy is swooped up by insulin, converted into fat and stored.  Since it is the job of the pancreas to produce the insulin necessary to remove glucose from the bloodstream (and store it as fat), eating a high carbohydrate diet causes the pancreas to work overtime, to eventually become worn out or dysfunctional.

A dysfunctional pancreas produces excess insulin, resulting in a drastic drop in the blood sugar level (hypoglycemia), thereby leading to cravings of more sugar.  Then, more sugar is consumed and the cycle starts over.  Remember, insulin is the fat-storage hormone – the hormone that converts the foods you’ve consumed into stored fat.  Consequently, an overproduction of insulin leads to excess fat storage.

The body gets its fuel or energy from the three macronutrient sources: 1) carbohydrates, 2) protein, and 3) fat.  The carbohydrate or glycogen energy reserves are used up first, followed by our protein and fat reserves.  (Glycogen is the form in which glucose is stored in the muscles and the liver.)

After approximately 3 days on the Ideal diet, your glycogen reserves are depleted and your body begins to burn your stored fat cells for energy naturally.  This results in your body producing ketonic bodies (ketones)  that are a natural appetite suppressant thus preventing cravings after the first few days and providing you with energy.  You will start losing weight-or fat-as soon as fat becomes your first source of energy.  You will then burn fat while nourishing muscle with the high-quality, highly-absorbable Ideal foods containing the 9 essential amino acids that you consume throughout the day.  Remember, muscle is the engine that burns calories every minute of every day, and by supplying your diet with this essential protein, you ensure that your muscle is not used significantly for energy.

During this time you will also re-balance your pancreas by giving it a much-needed rest.  A properly functioning pancreas is the key to avoiding filling up your fat reserves once you have completed the “diet” period and you return to more normal eating.

It is well known that there are certain foods as well as certain bad eating habits that cause weight gain and there are other foods and eating habits that prevent weight loss.  The Ideal diet plan will guide you and support you in your quest to lose fat safely by helping you understand the difference between “eating a balanced diet” and “eating for weight loss.”  And most importantly, upon reaching the final stage, you will also have learned to use the right combinations of foods within each meal to maintain your weight loss permanently.

With the ideal diet, you will not only rediscover your ideal shape, but you will also significantly improve your health.  The plan is designed to work with Ideal’s high-quality nutritional supplements, a unique combination that guarantees safe and healthy weight loss.  These supplements are designed to ensure a nutritionally comprehensive weight loss program.

Supplementation is crucial to your success since you will be missing out on some important fats and other nutrients during this short-term diet or “diet” period.  The coach works with your dieter’s profile (that you will fill out) to assist you in selecting the proper supplementation for your specific issues (e.g. food allergies, digestive issues, and toxicity of the liver or kidneys).  The coach will encourage you to consult with your health care provider regarding any such issues.

Nutritional Supplements

The supplements required as part of the Ideal Protein Diet Weight Loss Method have been formulated specifically to ensure that the dieter receives the minimum daily recommended amounts of essential nutrients based on RDA guidelines for a typically healthy person age 19 to 50. As with the amount of protein in our protocol, it must be stressed that these are the minimum amounts required by the body daily and that there is not any amount of nutrient (macro or micro) that would be considered a “high dose” or hyper amount. Occasionally, a dieter may need additional supplementation (due to age or particular medical condition) and that should be addressed under the guidance of his or her medical professional. These supplements are given merely to make up any shortcomings the dieter may experience while temporarily omitting certain food groups (i.e. fruits, dairy products, grains, root vegetables and legumes) from their daily meals while on the weight loss phases of the Ideal Protein Diet Weight Loss Method.  If you do not take these supplements your weight loss will stall as the body will start to hang onto what you give it looking for what it needs, however, cannot readily locate.

Calcium

684 mg of elemental calcium is supplied by the daily servings of our two supplements.
600 mg in the form of calcium citrate comes from the “CAL-MAG”. 84 mg as calcium citrate is supplied in the “MULTI–VITA”.
If a person was to have three servings of high calcium foods per day they would be receiving about 900 mg of elemental calcium. Eight ounces of whole milk provides about 291 mg, skim milk about 302 and 2% and 1%, 297 and 300 mg respectively.

An eight-ounce glass of calcium-fortified orange juice contains roughly the same (about 300 mg). Cheeses average about 175 mg per serving (Mozzarella: 147, Cheddar: roughly 200). Eight ounces of yoghurt yield about 300 mg and a cup of ice cream supplies around 160 mg. People on the IDEAL PROTEIN WEIGHT LOSS METHOD will not be eating these foods (while on the weight loss phases) therefore it is necessary to supplement them with the calcium that they would be getting from these commonly consumed foods.

IDEAL PROTEIN DIETERS are required to eat 4 cups of vegetables, two green salads and one serving of whole protein food (meat, fish or fowl) per day. These foods will amply supply the remaining calcium and ensure our program adheres to the US RDA and Canadian RNI guidelines.

Potassium

449 mg. of elemental potassium is supplied in the daily servings of three of our products.
330 mg. are supplied by 1/4 teaspoon (1.3 g) of the “Ideal Salt”.
20 mg. in the form of potassium citrate comes from the “MULTI–VITA”.
99 mg. in the form of potassium citrate comes from the “Natura Potassium”.

A healthy adult usually loses about 2,000 mg of potassium per day (via urine, perspiration, and faeces) and generally accepted guidelines recommend replacing that amount daily through our foods. These folks could easily take in twice that amount with no ill effects and athletes or people involved in strenuous activity will normally supplement to avoid becoming hypokalemic due to increasing potassium lost through excessive perspiration. Current USDA recommendations suggest adults should strive for between 3500 – 4700 mg /day.

Again, the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method focuses on the minimum daily requirements and, because we are not consuming some food groups which are common sources of the daily potassium requirement (i.e. root vegetables, fruit, dairy and grains) we must supplement while on the weight loss phases of the program. Now certain conditions and certain medications, particularly some diuretics (‘water pills’) can cause the retention of potassium. If you are not sure about your medications, please check with your prescriber and Clinics may contact the Scientific Support Center for guidelines. If your physician has you on a ‘potassium restricted diet’ then you would use the regular “Redmond’s Sea Salt” and not the “Ideal Salt” during your Ideal protein weight loss.

Magnesium

320 mg. of elemental magnesium is in the daily servings of two of our products.
300 mg. in the form of magnesium citrate comes from the “CAL – MAG”.
20 mg. in the same form comes from our “MULTI – VITA” vitamin.

U.S. guidelines recommend adult women to receive 320 mg. daily (more if pregnant) and men to receive 420 mg.2 Most common dietary sources of magnesium are nuts, legumes, cereals and grains, dairy products and dark green leafy vegetables. With the exception of the last, these foods will not be consumed during our weight loss phases, hence the need for supplementation.

Very Pleased with IP Diet

I as we all have, done many diets but this was the first one were someone explained what was going on inside that was responsible for making the fat go on the outside. BF Spa Large IP Product Selection

I did the Ideal Protein Diet at another centre two yrs. ago and found it difficult to stay on the program due to their tiny selection of IP foods. Best place ever in Durham is Beauty-Full Spa who have a very large selection of Ideal Protein Foods and to my astonishment have offered the diet since 2006! The guy who looks after the program is really good and took great interest in my weight loss with many tips and suggestions.

Love the education!

I have over the years done numerous weight loss programs only to end up unhappy and energy empty.
