What is IPL?

IPL Photofacial is a remarkable and gentle treatment for troublesome rosacea, facial vascular redness, large pores, sun damage and hyperpigmentation, as well as preventative and maintenance treatment for general signs of aging and wrinkles. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light Therapy and is a non-ablative therapy meaning that it does not harm or remove the upper layer of the skin. Instead, it focuses on deeper skin layers to promote new collagen production and small vessels such as capillaries to improve skin tone, smoothness and appearance. Our Soft Light IPL machine contains a flash lamp and generates a bright light source which the body interprets as heat. A computer is used to set the length of the flash (intensity) and calibrate the machine (length time of the flash). IPL is used to treat a wide variety of conditions including Photorejuvenation (also called, FotoFacial™, PhotoFacial™, PhotoDerm™, EpiLight™, MultiLight™, and PlasmaLight); Hyperpigmentation, Rosacea, Broken Capillaries, Spider Veins, Brown Spots (also called Sun Spots, Age Spots), Acne Photoclearance and Hair Removal. Most importantly, IPL is the essential modern anti-aging tool that stimulates collagen supply thus increasing the elasticity of your skin; smoothes the skin’s texture; reduces pore size; and effectively reduces facial wrinkles and tones (tightens) your skin. IPL offers a safe, non-invasive solution that can be tailored to your individual condition and skin type, providing superior cosmetic results and outstanding satisfaction all with no down time (off work time).

How does IPL Work?

1. Photorejuvenation meaning Anti-Aging, Vascular Rosacea & Broken Capillaries, Pigmented Lesions, Spider Veins, Brown/Sun Spots, Hyperpigmentation (Melasma).
As a result of sun exposure, the aging process and lifestyle choices, skin degrades and visible imperfections develop. Our IPL Soft Light uses pulsed light to selectively target the chromophore melanin for pigmented lesions and the chromophore oxyhemoglobin for vascular lesions. Vascular lesions manifest themselves in many forms. Spider veins (Telang-iectasias) are the most common vascular lesions and are typically found on the face and legs. Pigmented lesions occur when an abundance of melancytes are found in the skin. When dark pigment multiplies, if forms freckles (lentigines), brown age spots (ephileds) and moles (nevi). As the intense pulse light is selectively absorbed by the target chromophore, the resulting photothermal process destroys the melanin that causes the lesion to eventually heal up and fade away. The bottom line is that all of these conditions age us too quickly, thus IPL is an effective tool to turn back the clock and assists greatly in the restoration of many of your youthful features.

2. Acne Photoclearance
Propionibacterium acnes a.k.a. “P. acnes bacteria” is a type of bacteria that is normally present in the skin. This type of bacteria thrives in an oxygen free environment, which is why they are able to multiply once a blockage of a pore occurs. Once a pore becomes blocked, often with an oily substance, P. acnes bacteria present in the shaft begin to multiply. This in turn attracts the body’s white blood cells. The white blood cells attempt to surround and kill the P. acne bacteria. Once there are enough P. acnes bacteria and white blood cells together, an infectious lump or closed comedone (whitehead) forms. And that is how acne starts! Our IPL Soft Light delivers a deeply penetrating combination of green-yellow-red wave-lengths to destroy P. acnes bacteria while, at the same time, reducing inflammation associated with acne.

Long-term treatment benefits:

Reported changes include improvement in acne scarring, wrinkles, in pink and brown discolouration, spider veins, sun damage, pore size, age spots, pink and brown blemishes. The degree of improvement can vary but averages of 50% – 75% improvement in anything that is pink and vascular or brown and melanin in nature. The improvement is fine to moderate for acne scarring, wrinkles, skin textures irregularities, laxity and smoothness is 50% – 75%. Significant improvement in redness, Rosacea, pinkness, Spider Veins, pores and skin texture.

Why are multiple treatments necessary?

Depending on the number of conditions being treated, and the severity of the individual problem, a series of 5 treatment sessions is recommended. You can return to work the same day and resume all your regular activities. By dividing the full program into several treatments, the procedure provides gradual improvement with very low risk – and, it preserves the wonderful “no down time” feature that people appreciate so much.

How many treatments are required?

This depends on the size, location, depth and colour of your lesion. Spider veins on the face and age spots generally do well with up to 5 treatments, while darker or deeper birthmarks may require additional treatments. Port wine stains, hemangiomas and leg veins usually experience satisfactory results from IPL treatments, although as many as 5 to 8 treatment sessions may be required. Each session usually lasts 15-20 minutes. Treatments should be placed 3 to 8 weeks apart to allow your body to remove the maximum amount of pigment cells. You will continue to see a lightening of your lesion after each treatment as your body disposes of the pigment cells.

What results can you expect from IPL treatments?

Most clients will see improvement in their vascular and pigmented lesions. The improvement can be quite dramatic. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, there is always a possibility that only minor changes will occur and in rare cases there is no response.

Do I have to miss work or scheduled social functions?

No. This procedure is a “no downtime” procedure meaning that you may return to all scheduled activities immediately. After your treatment your skin may look slightly flushed temporarily. This mild “glow” will usually not be noticed by other individuals. If you wish, you may apply powder or make-up right away.

Is IPL Photorejuvenation painful?

You will experience a slight sensation as the pulses of therapeutic light are passed over your skin. The sensation is very mild and easily tolerated.

Why are five treatments required?

It has been demonstrated that the majority of people will achieve most of their improvement after five treatments are performed. Improvement is gradual and becomes evident after several treatments have been completed. Therefore single treatments are not recommended prior to the completion of the first series of five procedures.

What improvement will I notice after a series of five treatments are finished?

Skin will look refreshed, tightened and rejuvenated. Improvement in tone and texture of skin is experienced. A significant reduction of brown and red areas of discolouration, small red blood vessels (Spider Veins) and irregular areas of pigmentation occurs. Pore size is reduced by up to one third. A reduction of red discolouration will be evident in individuals with Rosacea or abnormal flushing. Skin looks more beautiful and feels much softer following IPL Photorejuvenation.

How long do the results last?

With the passage of time and with environmental exposure, skin ages as we do, IPL Photorejuvenation will provide benefits and significantly reverse many of the visible signs of sun- damaged skin. The improvement that has been achieved following a first series of five treatments can be maintained by occasional single maintenance treatments.

When should maintenance treatments be done?

We recommended maintaining the skin looking vital, even, smooth and youthful, that a single maintenance treatment be performed at intervals of 30 to 90 days.

Can I have a treatment while my skin is tanned?

No. We prefer to treat skin that is not tanned, although a slight “chronic” tan may be acceptable.

What areas can benefit from IPL Photorejuvenation?

Areas of skin which will benefit the most are generally sun exposed areas. The commonest areas treated are the face, the neck, the chest and the backs of the hands.
